There is nothing as frustrating as cleaning your home only to find that a day later it has a thin layer of dust on it. If you aren’t sure why your home is so dusty and aren’t sure what you can do to prevent this issue from happening—it may be time to look at your HVAC system.

If there is no other reasonable explanation for your dusty home, it may be that your HVAC system isn’t filtering through dust properly. The good news is, there are a few common culprits of this type of dust building up in your home, and the more you know about addressing them, the easier it will be to get your home back to its normal, sparkling condition.

Air Filters

The first and most common place to look when you experience unplanned dust build-up is the air filters. Filters are designed to trap dust and other materials from getting into your home (and circulating throughout your home as well). If your air filters are too dirty, they may not be able to work properly and can cause dust to build up in the home.

Take a look at your air filter, if it has a thick layer of debris on it, switch it out and see how it impacts your dust levels.

Leaky Air Ducts

Leaky air ducts are more common than many people realize and if you have unexplained dust in your home, then your air ducts may be to blame. How do you look for leaky air ducts in your home? Look for dust build-up on the vent registers, hot and cold spots in the home, and high energy bills. If you are experiencing these symptoms along with unexplained dust, then you may have leaks near the joints in your air ducts.

The good news is an experienced HVAC professional will be able to help you fix these issues.

High Humidity

Check the humidity levels in your home. Testing is simple and you just need a small device to look at your levels. If your home has high humidity, start running a dehumidifier to reduce humidity levels. When your home is too humid, it can create a perfect environment for fungi, dust mites, and mold to thrive.

Insulate Your Home

Make sure your home is properly insulated and look for cracks around your doors and windows. Simply re-caulking and a little insulation can go a long way in your home. You just need to call a professional for help.
