Before that hot Texas summer weather approaches, it is so important that you make sure that your home is ready to handle the heat. More specifically, it is important that you make sure that your HVAC system is up, running, and ready to handle the extra pressure that this warm weather brings. After all, no one wants their air conditioning to go out in the middle of summer.
With this in mind, here are a few questions you should be asking to make sure that your home is ready for summer HVAC season.
Make Sure You’re Swapping Out Your Filters
Depending on your home, the type of filters you have, how much dust and dog hair there is in your home—you could need to be swapping out your filters as often as every 2-3 weeks. If you have a permanent HVAC filter, you need to make sure that you are cleaning it every month. This is one of the easiest ways to make sure your air conditioner is working all season long, so if you haven’t cleaned or swapped out your filter in a while—now is the time to do it!
Check on Your Outside Unit
Before summer hits and your AC unit will need to kick things into high gear, make sure that you check on the outside unit, or the A/C condenser. Remember, in order for your condenser to work properly, it needs to have plenty of space around it. A good rule of thumb is to leave 5 feet of space above the unit and 2 feet of clearance on each side.
Make sure nothing is crowding your unit and no plants have grown on or too close to it. If your unit sits in direct, exposed sunlight for most of the day, try to add something that can filter away the sun.
Schedule an Annual Tune Up
You should always have annual tune ups before you head into summer. An HVAC professional should come in to check on electrical connections, coils, moving parts, blower belts, motors, fins and other components of your system. They should also do things like test your thermostat, clean the condensate drain, measure, and change your refrigerant and check to make certain your system is ready for summer.
