We may have just started 2022, but as we all know time goes by faster every year. New efficiency standards are coming in 2023. The last increase was in 2015, which made it illegal to install any equipment rated less than 14 SEER in the state of Texas. Starting in 2023, the minimum efficiency standard is being raised to 15.2 SEER in the state of Texas.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This ratio is a measurement of how much electricity is being used by your Air Conditioning system. You will also notice a SEER rating on your home located on the yellow sticker that is so hard to peel off.

SEER is not the only factor in how much electricity your air conditioner uses. The design of your duct system plays a role in your efficiency as well. Duct insulation is rated by R-value which is scheduled to increase to R-8 instead of R-6.

This also means that all manufacturers will have their equipment re-certified through AHRI. The Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Institute” AHRI” will require manufacturers to re-certify their equipment. AHRI is a government agency is which through its program certifies an accurate and unbiased evaluation of heating, water heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration equipment.

Here at Texas Pride Heating & Air, we already recommend 16 SEER or higher equipment and install it. However, with these new regulations, manufacturers are required to have the same equipment produced now re-certified, which is a long and expensive process.
